Basically when i click on a folder it opens the folder but leaves the old one on the desktop, so if im going through 3 or 4 folders i have 3 or 4 windows left open by the time i get to the one i want.

Any way to open a window and not leave behind the window i was previously in?

Also make sure you're running the Finder in "Brushed Metal mode." Click the little elliptical button in the top right corner to switch between the two.

Hold down the Option (Alt) key while double clicking a folder.

I'm assuming you're talking about the Finder. If you like using a spatial Finder (i.e. where a new window appears for each folder) but don't want to have a trail of windows left then this is a neat little tip.

You beat me to it!
Alt clicking application can also be handy too. It hide all apps other than the one your click on. Pre-expose this was very handy for getting to the Finder/desktop.
