According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5172#1

the first USB device you plug into the port configures it to either USB 2.0 or 3.0. I've used both ports for 2.0 devices, but I'm getting a 3.0 external hard drive in a few days. Am I seriously stuck with 2.0 now?

You misunderstood. What they meant is don't connect a USB 2.0 hub to the MacBook and have a USB 3.0 device connected to the hub if you want the best performance.
