does anyone have experience with an external blu ray drive? is USB 2.0 fast enough to carry the signal as well as power the drive or is FireWire 800 a better option?

I have the LG Slim Portable blu-ray multi drive, Model: CP40NG10. Works great with my 2012 11" MBA, I've watched movies and ripped/burned both blu-rays and dvds with no issues.

Is there any difference in performance if the blu ray drive is USB 2.0 or 3.0?

Not at 6x. That's still within usb2 speeds. Switch to a 12x drive and USB3 is needed.

If you are ripping in volume, the extra $ and size for a full sized drive could well be worth the expense.

Cheers,

"I have that one....it works fine with USB 2.0"

I will "second" reply #6.

I, too, have the Samsung and it's a nice drive -- no problems.
