Macbook boots for a second

My daughters Mac book no longer boots.

it powers up and the apple appears but then it shuts down.

Does this software or hardware related

I tried to boot to CD ( mac os X install disc ) but it just powers off ..

The battery is charged cant figure this one out.

Any help would be great
