Plants vs. Zombies 2 Downloaded 16 Million Times Worldwide, New Content Coming

EA today announced that Plants vs. Zombies 2 has been downloaded 16 million times worldwide since being released last Thursday. Plants vs. Zombies 2 is the followup to EA's popular Plants vs. Zombies title, which originally debuted on the App Store in 2010.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 utilizes the same lane defense gameplay that made the original game a hit, but it also offers up some new plants, new gameplay mechanics, and time travel to settings like ancient Egypt. With 16 million downloads, it represents EA's most successful mobile game launch to date.

During EA's Gamescom press conference this morning (via Joystiq), franchise director Tony Leamer also announced an upcoming content pack for the game, called "Far Future." There are no further details about the content pack at this time, so it is unclear when it might be released.

Though Plants vs. Zombies 2 is a freemium game, much of the content is available without paying. Our sister site TouchArcade has released a guide on how to spend as little money as possible (which actually shows that gamers can play through the entire game without spending any money) and has also published a detailed review of the game that calls it an "incredible sequel."

Plants vs. Zombies 2 is a universal app that can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

This is fairly sad - the masses are putting up with In App Purchases and the freemium model.

I would rather EA put out a $50 game on iOS that includes everything than feel like I'm in a kid approved casino

I'll be sticking with my Nintendo 3DS XL for all of my portable gaming, where gaming is still fun and doesn't nag you every 5 minutes to spend more money on a game you already installed.

Actually having almost beaten the game I can tell you your statement is completely false. It never asks you to buy anything, it only informs you of purchases you CAN make IF you want different plants. You can beat the entire game without buying any additional plants.

You can choose the one you like the most, just let people use their money as they want.

For me, for example: I like it to be freemium, since I didn't pay anything, plus, it is a bigger challenge for me to finish the game without buying anything, and I like that challenge. Takes more time to finish the game, which I think it's a good thing

That it needs to be pointed out that someone has taken the time to make a 'how-to-avoid-getting-nickel-and-dimed" guide for this app is pretty telling...

Is anyone else finding this game almost impossible to beat without using in app purchases? It's just too difficult…

I'm not that far into the game but if to move forward you need to start buying inhouse purchase then the delete button will be hit.

i've played it for a few days, it's kind of repetitive. OK for a free game.

The consensus is that it doesn't not require in-app purchases to play/win

My own experience and from other reviewers, there is no need to pay for anything.

Which is a complete shocker given that this is EA after all. Who nickel and dime you any chance they get.

The hints/tips/guide whatever you want to call it is merely to save you money as the normal free stuff nets has the same effect as the paid stuff.

Yes the game is repetitive. It has been that way since the original PC version.

I'm on the 3rd world, I haven't spent a dime, and I rarely use the coins I earn. I don't mind IAP when they're power ups and coins because I never buy them anyway. If I'm struggling, I eventually get past the level. It takes time... but at least I don't feel like I cheated my way through it.

Shovel only purpose is to remove your own plants.

The tombstones are there to more or less block the peas from reaching oncoming zombies and take up a space for you to plant something. Put down catapult ones instead, like the cabbage or corn one and it'll go for zombies 1st then goes for the tombstones when lane is clear.

Tombstones don't have to be cleared either for level to be completed.

I was going to get this but I hate the idea of in app purchases. Why don't they just charge $5 and let us play.

Don't let that stop you. You only need to spend actual money if you want to get additional plants. The additional plants aren't even any better than the plants you already unlock as you play through the game.

Games should be difficult, but the problem is they are designed now not difficulty for fun or whatnot, but difficulty that only drives you to pay for the real way they want you to play.

A game's designer should have a direction and driving the consumer to a casino like atmosphere sucks

----------

There is also a complete lack of trust now with EA. They ruined their $10 Scrabble HD app for iPad, Real Racing 3 launched very playable without spending money, but now that has gone bad.

It is a ticking time bomb before this game is completely changed to be unplayable without some IAP. Or at the very least quite difficult and frustrating.

I deleted it because its free to play. I try to avoid free to play apps as much as possible. It's simply an awful experience and developers should not feel motivated to do it.

Also it lacks the simplicity and charme of the
First game

I'm getting close to beating the game and I've yet spent a dime on any in-app purchases. It's looking beatable to me.

I wasn't going to download it out of protest, but curiosity got the best of me. I've finished world 1 with 3 stars everywhere except for two where you have to wait 120 seconds before spending any sun. Impossible with the plants I have, I guess I could use the inapp coins to pay for some powerups? But I haven't tried it yet. World 2 is about 1/2 way done with all stars earned.

So far the game is OK, not nearly as fun as the first, the pace is MUCH slower and a lot more repetitive. I will not spend any money on it, but if it was $10 at launch I would have payed for it and it would have been OK.

Long waited for it, but the wait was worth it.

You don't have to wait 120 seconds in the beginning of the game, it can be done during the game as well.
