iOS 7 eating contacts?

I perused the first two pages of threads and didn't see anything about this.

If I open messages and start typing a name into the To: section, the name I'm looking for will pop up like it's supposed to. However, when I tap to select it changes to a phone number instead of the name and that person is no longer in my contacts. I can send the message and re-add the contact from the message thread but if I don't send it and cancel the message, that number is gone for good.

Has anybody else experienced this?
