Disk utility stuck in unmounting internal drive

My internal HD crashed on my iMac running Lion, and to recover I've done the following, similar for the external job described in posts here, like one above.

- Boot from Installation CD
- Go to Disk Utility
- Run First Aid - Repair disk - on the HD
- Erase HD
- Partition HD
- Restore from Time Machine backup (which I have)

However on the 3rd step above, utility is stuck in "Verifying...." step. Any recourse I can take to get past step 3?
