HDMI version 2.0 has been announced. It has 4K at 60FPS. Is this one of the things Apple were waiting on before releasing the Mac Pro?

I thought they were mainly waiting on the Xeon E5 to be in mass production.
If HDMI 2 is anything like 1, there should be a "dumb" (cheap) adapter that can go from TB/MDP/DL-DVI -> HDMI. If I were Apple I wouldn't wait just based on that as it doesn't seem like that big of a deal.
My thoughts were that HDMI 1.4 wasn't up to the frame rates needed for 4K on a computer, and currently 4K TVs are becoming more affordable than smaller 4K monitors, so those TVs may well be used with the new Mac Pro (displaying a retina iPad screen at native res for app development is one reason for needing a 4K screen). And as they will only have an HDMI connector, having one up to the job is important.
Of course new Xeons and Thunderbolt 2 are other things holding up the new Mac Pro.

No because the HDMI 2.0 chips will not be ready for several months (probably CES 2014 in beta). You can always buy a future TB 2.0 dock with HDMI 2.0.

HDMI 1.4 can only do UHD at 24Hz with 8 bit color in YCbCr 4:2:0.

Why should Apple delay? New technologies are always developing, and a flexible pro machine is built to be expandable and thereby future-proof (at least for several years). So users can just pop in a HDMI 2 card into one of the new Mac Pro's open PCIe slots sometime down the road.

Panasonic have announced a 4K TV with HDMI 2.0 that will be released next month.

Saw that too. Not sure who will be suppling the chip set. In the past it has taken several months to R&D new chips. Not sure who is OEMing them to Panasonic.
Still think HDMI 2.0 is unrelated to anything Apple is doing (and won't be seen in Apple for a while). Apple traditionally doesn't adopt any early developed technologies unless they are involved.
Apparently the Sony 4K TVs with HDMI 1.4 will be firmware upgradeable to 2.0.
It seems that either 2.0 has no new hardware demands (the HDMI organisation has said existing cables work with 2.0 and there is no new interface either, so that side is definitely OK), or manufacturers had it covered ahead of time because most of the spec has been clear for some time.
Does anyone know for sure that HDMI 2.0 will require chips that are different from what is currently provided in Late 2013 Mac Pros and MacBook Pros? Some people are claiming (or speculating) that there is a planned firmware upgrade which will enable 2.0.
