Reading a Windows formatted disk

OS X can natively read (but not write) NTFS.

Formatting is an option, not a requirement. Out of the box, your Mac can read but not write or format NTFS drives. With a NTFS driver such as the free NTFS-3G or one of its commercial alternatives, you may write and format as well as read NTFS drives.
