Early Graphics Benchmarks Show Significant Boost for iPhone 5s

Following yesterday's introduction of the iPhone 5s, a new GFXbench result showing partial graphic benchmarking results has appeared revealing significant improvements compared to the iPhone 5 on the Egypt HD 2.5 test (via @nerdtalker and @anexanhume).

A comparison between the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5 on the Egypt benchmark show a significant increase in frame rate for the iPhone 5s, with the offscreen 1080p score moving from 29.8 fps to 56.0 fps and the onscreen score improving from 41.1 fps to 53.0 fps.

Comparison of iPhone 5s and iPhone 5 graphics benchmarks for Egypt HD 2.5 test
Certainly there are some caveats associated with the benchmark given that it includes only a single test and a need for developers to optimize their apps for the new 64-bit A7 architecture with support for OpenGL ES version 3.0 in the iPhone 5s will undoubtedly yield differing levels of improvement in real-world situations. Still, based on this single snapshot it appears the graphics performance will indeed see a significant improvement in the new device.

Please note that the onscreen (iphone native resolution) is lower than the offscreen 1080p because vsync locks the max refresh rate onscreen to 60 FPS. There are some scenes with score below 60 FPS, bringing the average down for onscreen.

Offscreen is roughly double A6 (56 FPS vs 29.8 FPS), close to their 2x claim.

The S4 seems to have gotten ~40 FPS on the Egypt offscreen 1080p test compared to the 5s' 56 FPS. I wonder how many more frames the 5s will get when the app is recompiled for 64 bit use.

Excellent graphic performance with a tiny screen? Apple really needs bigger screen size phones.

I Didn't think it would be this significant, though. The rumors were calling for something much more modest.

I have trouble getting excited for things like this, though, because we won't see developers really take advantage of it for a few years.

Now if only we could see battery improvements as significant as these speedbumps...

That GFXbench graph is highly misleading. They are just showing the right tip of it.

Yes. Apple stated OpenGL ES 3.0 compliance, which series 5 doesn't have. GLconfig contains PVRTC, which an ImgTec GPU feature. Other option is custom Apple implementation of Rogue.

Impressive. But I'd rather see Apple focus on improving Siri. I ask Siri to set a timer and she spends 10+ seconds going out to Apple's server to figure out what I want to do. Ridiculous.

Yipee, Candy Crush can now run at 600fps instead of 300fps.

Then beam sync limits it to 60fps.

thats a great graphics benchmark, i'm hopeful that means the iPhone 6 would have 1080p screen res (if apple would use the same graphic in the next iphone, as I see it is far more than capable)

They're thinking the same as when they priced the iPad mini at 269 when it should really have been closer to 150. The fact is, Apple is a premium brand and their products are still premium. You're paying for quality. It's clear the 5C isn't a 'cheap' iPhone, it's an iPhone in which you can choose from a range of pretty colours. But fundamentally that's what it is...an iPhone.

Am I the only one who doesn't experience these exaggerations in real life? I swear, I'm starting to think my iPhone and iPads are special or something....it doesn't take Siri nearly as long as others lead me to believe.

Accuracy is what I'd like to see improved.

Nothing really, as graphics benchmarks don't really benefit from 64-bit.

It's about right, actually. They didn't say each iPhone has been consistent with growth of speed.
