Not being an audio nut or high end editor, I merely have over 1,000 albums (thats LPs, Cassette Tapes and CDs) in my music collection, and after having been thoroughly frustrated with the archives and lousy selection iTunes has to offer I want to know what the best setup to record my Cassettes and Lps to my G4 would be. I have a Sansui stereo rack system (1970's vintage) and am very pleased with the Boston Acoustic speakers I have with them. Since moving to the Digital world of audio and visual however I'm a bit lacking in what equipment and software to use to get the job done. I have over a 1,000 items in my purchased list in itunes but could easily double that if I could convert my LPs and Tapes into audio files.

Hey Sparky,
I was thinking the best way for you to get your albums on your G4. You will need to get the signal from the 70's vintage stereo, you might want to try the Edirol UA-1EX. This unit will take the line level output from your stereo and convert the signal to USB. Software wise I would choose AudioExpress from Real Mac Software. Hope this helps.

I guess my thought was to use the RCA jacks from the AU-717 pre-Amp and plug it directly into the G4, but I guess that's just too simple huh? (thinking to myself). I don't think it will work to the mic input jack.

That's the easiest, and cheapest, way to do it ;). Just get a stereo-RCA to 1/8" minijack cable and connect an RCA output from your amplifier to the line-in on the G4 then hit record in one of the suggested applications :). As I understand it, the input on the G4 will switch between Mic-level and Line-level depending on what's plugged in to it.

You could buy an external Analogue-to-Digital convertor, but... why bother :rolleyes:

Sure you can do that..go from the RCA Jacks from the pre amp and go directly into the mic input. That will work. The reason I choose the RCA to USB digital converter is to give you a little more control over that signal. Just make sure to take a real close look at this unit before you decide.

I am currently using the RCA to minijack converter to import audio into my G5.

I am working on a project to digitize my mothers CD's and Tapes for her Christmas present. I am using Garageband with some specific Audio units filters and settings to enhance, and clean some of the sound.

I really am happy with the sound quality, and the ability to import the long tracks into itunes, and use itunes to split tracks and make compressed AAC files.

I am also keeping the raw garageband recordings, to have high quality non-compressed data in case the AAC audio quality ever comes to be a concern.
