What happens if I subscribe? I don't want my phone to download content using up up my data and battery. I am a podcast junkie, but I guess I can't really understand what subscribe means versus not subscribing.

I thought that my having a podcast show on my iTunes meant I was subscribed. For example, I see This American Life podcast on iTunes, I click on it to get it in my podcasts, and it's already sitting there. Isn't that what subscribing is? What happens then when I go into my podcasts, and there's a subscribe button next to This American Life. I don't get it. What benefit is there to clicking on the subscribe? what does it do?

(And also get a bug where I am not able to delete old, listened to podcasts that have reappeared in my list.)
