okay I'm a bit stumped - where is the unified search field. The only thing I see is in safari or in the inbox and it doesn't search your phone first like the old search did - it checked emails your calendar and other things in your phone first - where is it? Or is it just gone?

Are you talking about Spotlight? Where on previous versions of iOS you would swipe to a page to the left of your home screen to search the phone?
It still exists. Now, just swipe down from the middle of the screen on any of your home screens and it will appear.
