Just chatted with someone else.:

Now Chatting with Hope

Welcome to U.S. Apple Online Store! My name is Hope; How may I assist you today?

Im wondering about activation.

can I buy a phone for my wife as a surprise and the phone not leave the store activated?

Hey there, carriers send the iPhone partially activated and then rest of the activation takes place with you at your home.

this is the same as buying it in the store?

That is correct.

so theoretically i can leave the store with my phone activated and hers not.

When upgrading?

It will be activated partially, but she will need to connect to iTunes or WiFi to complete the setup.

will her current phone still work?

it wouldnt be a surprise if her phone still worked

her birthday is in a week

Yes, her current iPhone will work until the new iPhone is setup.

ok great thank you so much. i feel confident going in line soon. haha

thanks again

You are most welcome and I am sure she will love your surprise. :)

thanks

Don't believe it. They have to tie it to a number in their system and it will shut down the other phone. I tried the same thing last year and even got them to agree to not open the phone in the store but the systems still transferred it when they scanned it to sell.

Best option is to have it shipped from apple or from the carrier.

If you buy it unlocked you can leave with it unactivated. Otherwise it needs to be activated immediately.
