So Apple keeps bragging about console quality graphics with the new A7 chip, and presumably the A7X would be the same chip but with quad core graphics.

I was thinking, if the A7X or even A6X is so powerful, just how powerful is it? How would it say compare to a PS3? PS3 games are usually at 1280x720, is based on 2006 hardware, whereas iPad has 2012/2013 hardware. Could iPad play say Splinter Cell Blacklist (the PS3 version, not a potentially stripped down mobile version, like Conviction was for iOS) power wise as well as a PS3 does, especially with an external game controller?

It'd be really sweet to be able to play PS3 quality games on an iPad :D

iPad gaming is great except for the fact that the touchscreen controls really suck, I'm excited for game controllers being supported now. Now just see if there's some games out there I like!

I think that it will handle PS3 quality games... Real Racing 3 looks amazing on a mini (and it is using a A5 with no X) so A7X must be outstanding.

In short, they don't compare to the PS3. Even comparing something as simple as FLOPS we are way off.

The A7 already has 4 clusters, meaning it's the G6430.

Pretty sure the A7X would have the 6 cluster G6630 or a custom part with more clusters.

If you only want to compare FLOPS, A7X should be at 150+ GFLOPS. (speculation if it's 2x faster than A6X)
Now, I'm not sure about "correct" PS3 numbers, but XBOX 360 was at 355 GFLOPS (CPU, GPU combined):)

They're not even close to PS3/360 compute/graphics power yet. There's a reason the 360 was the size of a large textbook, and the iPhone 5S' chip is extremely small. It'll be at least 4-5 years until we see what most actually consider "console gaming level" (360, PS3/4) graphics in the iPhone/iPad.

I'd say it's closer to 2 years to be around 360/ps3 graphics. Mobile chips are at least doubling in power every year (at least in Apples case), and will keep on for a few more years.

360 was that big because of CPU/GPU technology of that time (8 years ago). PC tech and mobile (much more) have come a long way since then.

I think if the maxipad is not quad core, I will not buy it.

And I don't want white iOS 7.

Yeah I guess my point was that it will always be generations of consoles behind. Also they're big because they keep using increasingly more powerful tech. The xbox one is pretty much bigger than the 360 hah
