It is very possible. It happens every year.
Last year I ordered two phones at the same time. Same carrier, same color, same capacity. Both had 7-10 days estimated. One came in 3 days and the other took 14 days.
Did any of you guys order accessories? I ordered the 5S dock and I've just received an email saying its shipped. Does this make any difference to the iPhone's shipping?

It does not. Usually the accessories will ship sooner.
Although my Apple Representative said that they were saying October for the Gold...he also hinted that that might well change...as posted above, happens each year...as they know what stock they have and where the picture get's clearer, and they always give the worst case scenario...I've had it happen before with Mac's.
