Samsung 840 EVO running slow in macbook pro 2012, why? how to fix?

I replaced 750GB HDD by 250G SSD (Samsung 840Evo) in Macbook 2012, i7 2.9GHz (Mountain Lion OS X). It runs very slow, and SBBOD appears too much.

I was seeking support at apple discussion forum, but I got no solution except some opinions and "That looks like a problem with the SSD. If you hacked the system to enable TRIM, you're on your own."

Please share if you are having similar problem, or if you have found a fix for this problem.

I recently replaced my Seagate Momentus xt (500gb) with a 120gb evo and everything is super fast and (so far) hasn't done much beach balling as you described. As for "being on your own" with TRIM, I don't think thats the case as you can disable it again (I'm assuming you're using Trim Enabler, maybe theres another thing for doing that but I don't know). I'm not an expert but i'd try verifying (and/or verify disk permissions) is disk utility if you haven't already.

Disk Test scores (reliability test) for EVO SSD on Macbook Pro 2012

This score measures the reliability of EVO. If the disk is perfectly reliable, it would produce a score 0. If the score is highly flexible, it would produce higher scores. Any score value higher than 100 indicates that the SSD is extremely unpredictable (unacceptable SSD performance)

  1. Did you do a clone or clean install of OS X?
  2. Is the SSD firmware up-to-date?
  3. Did you do an SMC and PRAM reset?
  4. Is the SSD installed in the main HDD bay or the Opti-bay?

I did (a) clone using disk utility; (b) clean install; and (c) clone using Carbon Copy Cloner. All of them did not give me good result. The above results are from (c). (a) and (b) were even worse.

I am not aware if EVO SSD has released firmware update. I bought it just 2 wks ago, and thought it is a new release.

Yes I did both SMC and PRAM reset.

It is installed in the main HDD bay. Opti-bay is not used.

It is installed in the main HDD bay. Opti-bay is not used.

  1. Can you attach the SSD to a USB3 enclosure and run speed test?
  2. Can you try it in the Optibay and see if the results are the same?
  3. What is your negotiated link speed in System Info?

I do not have USB3 enclosure. My usb SATA dock is USB2. However, I have tried Blackmagic disk test on it, and the SSD was showing results above 300 MB/s write and around 500 MB/s for read test. Though the test shows incredible speed, the computer perform terribly slow, because of SBBOD issue.

I felt that the speed test was checking the data transfer rate between disk and mobo, and the results helped to inform that SSD and connector+cable are not defective.

I would do a complete clean install of OS X via USB thumb drive or Internet Recovery to the SSD, after do a PRAM and SMC reset and see the results. If the are the same, I would RMA the SSD, if the results are the same at that point, I would take the MBP to Apple.

Thanks for advice. At this point, I have RMA and hoping to see a better outcome.
