Until one has their tracking number, all else is irrelevant. Once the package is ready to ship, then and only then can a tracking number be assigned. Not before.
Once the tracking numbers been assigned, the package waits to be picked up, entered into the shippers timeline, and then you'll find its status on the shippers site. There are delays in data entry during this process. Apple and AT&T have their part so refined there's been times I've received my release day iPhone before the tracking number was visible to me.
It's why I always order from AT&T, they've performed flawlessly each & every year. AT&T uses FedEx in my area, I get my phone before 10 AM the morning that people are still in line at my local Apple store.
