Following the announcement of a partnership with Leica for charity earlier this week, Apple's senior vice president of design Jony Ive and industrial designer Marc Newson have created the (RED) Desk, an aluminum table that will be auctioned off to benefit Product (RED), reports The Verge.

Superstar designers on a mission: Created to help fight AIDS in Africa, (RED) Desk by Jony Ive & Marc Newson is a signed one-of-a-kind, machined from solid aluminum, with an intricate cellular surface pattern, fabricated by renowned aluminum specialists Neal Feay Studio.

The table, along with the one-of-a-kind Leica M Rangefinder and a pair of solid gold EarPods, which were both designed by Ive, will be auctioned via Sotheby's on November 23. Proceeds will go to Product (RED), a longtime Apple partner. Apple has raised more than $65 million for the charity since 2006.

Again, nice but...

In all seriousness, it's great that they're doing this for charity, though. Besides the ego-fest that Jony seems to be spewing (see last thread about this). I do hope that he's focused on improving the software for Apple, which I'm sure he is.

Sometimes it's hard to remember that there are many designers at Apple.

Concern over what is not there...

Okay, if that was machined from a single bloack of Aluminum it would have been approximately 3'X3'x6' or 54 cu ft of Aluminum. If they left 5% of that block that means that 51.5 cu ft of waste (approximately). I like the recyclability factor, but maybe something that is artisitic and efficient is in order?

Yes everybody IS a critic.

They waste a LOT less with the design of the MBP's. And for the record, yes, I know the waste is recyclable. Still that's a LOT of wasted energy.

What is wrong with you people.

He's doing a great thing working with these companies to create one off designs to aid charity.

Stop making it all about Apple and iOS7.

That is the most hideous and very unpractical desk I have ever seen.

I think people forget these are more art pieces than functional products. I mean what was functional about Newson's aluminum lounge chair? But the thing sold for $1M.

Meh, it's a table. Though it's good to see great/well known designers, producing one of a kind pieces that people will buy for a lot of money with the money going to a good cause! Win win win!

And because someone is credited with creating something, doesn't mean they were the ONLY one to create that thing.

Jonny might have spent a total of 20 hours on it through a period of 2 months, while working 60 hour weeks at Apple.

This coming from a person living in the land of IKEA.

With respect, not really sure IKEA is a bashable option anymore, especially given that everyone now rips off their designs (at least in the UK).

Not really seen any ugly/impractical desks come from IKEA in years. The Galant range is excellent, as is the Vika (I own both). It's hard/stupid to think of a plank of wood, with two metal legs as 'ugly' and its not by any means comparable to a solid aluminum sculpted desk.

Very true, Ikea looking furniture is really popular these days.
