5th grader convicted of conspiracy to murder a classmate

I like to think I'm pretty hard to shock. That, over the course of the years, I've seen and heard just about the worst of what our great nation can come up with.

But this story, about a 5th grader convicted of conspiracy to murder a classmate, gave me pause today.

Quote:
Authorities discovered the plan when a fourth grader saw one of the boys playing with a knife aboard a school bus and told a school employee. A search of the 10-year-old’s backpack found a knife, a .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol and a full ammunition magazine, court records showed.
I guess my concept of "responsible gun ownership" is quite seriously at odds with the type of nitwit that lets his 10 year kid have access to a .45 pistol.

If the "gun enthusiasts" (ahem) who constantly pepper our little discussion forum with angry screeches about their God-given right to bear arms would once in a while acknowledge there is a problem in the gun-owning community that needs addressing, then I'd take them a little more seriously.

All that was needed was a "good guy with a gun" right?

From the OP's article ...

Quote:
A school counselor, Debbie Rogers, testified on Friday about her interview with the boy on the day the weapons were discovered. The boy said that he was planning to stab the girl to death because she was “really annoying” and that the second boy was to point the gun at anyone who tried to intervene, Ms. Rogers said.
Proving once again that the real problem in the U.S. is knives.

The real problem in the U.S. (with regard to violence) is Americans.

I bet the parents were just a couple of responsible gun owners too, right?

When I read news like this it seems we're living in the wild west, but then I look outside and everything looks normal. Weird.

Yeah.

That's probably what the parents who send their children to that school think.

Everything's normal.

Nothing to see here.

If we regulated firearms that 11 year old would have just purchased a firearm from the black market!

That's whats so insidious about it. Everything seems normal and sane...until it's not.

The North American and European sections look roughly equal to me.
Then again the US section is just a link to a different Wikipedia page which has about 25 pages of school shootings.

Just back in April, this happened in the small town I live in:

Quote:
...Police said they found several firearms and ammunition when they searched the 13-year-old's house on Wednesday.

The teen was apparently depressed about a fight he had with several other students in school.

Classmates overheard the student talking about his plans to shoot those students by Thursday morning. The classmates alerted school officials, who quickly called police.

"Several firearms and ammunition were found at the child's house and confiscated"
Among which included, I have been told, sawn-off shotguns and several rifles.

Stories like these are just fricking ridiculous.

Well, how many here have children with access to knives too? The gun owner here is NOT a responsible owner.

The problem is not the gun, the knife, the bat, the car, the bomb, or piano wire.
A lot of these kids spend 20+ hours a weekend and untold hours during the week killing people in video games, watching them killed in tv shows, movies and all over the internet.

Violence and the hollywood lust of it, is the problem.

If you want your kids to grow up to be kind, teach them kindness and start with killing one thing-YOUR TV. Then monitor their internet activities, my kids have had hour limits on their accounts since they started. Only now that they are in High School are they all up to an allowed 8 hours a day-so on weekends they are forced out of their rooms and interact with each other and do things other than stare at a screen of death.

Other 1st world countries have access to the same violence in the same video games and movies. Looking at Japan one can say they have even more violent forms of media. So how come they don't have a similar problem there? I grew up playing tons of shooters full of death and watching violent 80s action movies. Yet oddly, I'm not going into the world wanting to act out any of that.

I'm sorry. But, No - videogames and movies are not the problem.

Lets be very clear about a couple of things: Firstly, the United States is not alone in having kids who sometimes commit horrendous crimes. I remember, quite vividly, being horrified by the kidnapping, torture, and murder of James Bulger in Britain by a couple of ten year olds.

Horrific as that case was, the reality is that children (contrary to what contemporary society would have you believe) aren't quite the angelic little creatures you'd imagine. They are frequently violent, flatulent, manipulative, selfish little sociopaths. Its the duty of parents, teachers, clergymen, and (if necessary) police officers to at least temper those impulses.

What I find most appalling about this most recent story is how that child's access to a semi-automatic pistol is a force-multiplier. A 10 year old kid with a knife is a menace, albeit one that can be subdued. A kid with a Glock with 15 rounds in the magazine is a massacre waiting to happen.
