I'm pretty sure the answer is "yes", but mainly what I've seen has been about burning video....

I'm considering getting a blu ray burner (usb3, I'd guess) to burn data discs from my 2012 iMac.

This is possible to do, right? Maybe with Toast or some other software...but I could burn and then read those discs, right?

OS X will burn Blu-ray Data discs direct from the Finder. You only need Toast if you want more advanced options, or to burn a Blu-ray Video disc.

I have the LG BE14NU40 USB3 BR Burner that I use to burn BR data natively in OS X. Other than needing to purchase a better quality USB 3 cable (the cable included would sometimes cause random disconnects once I replaced that I never had problems again) it works perfectly with all of my Macs.
