Mail not updating Gmail

I use two different gmail accounts with Mail. My problem is that when I delete (archive) a message in Mail, it doesn't show as archived in Gmail until I quit Mail. At that point, it will update the gmail servers. The confusing thing is that if I read a message in Mail, it will show as read in gmail fairly quickly. Just not archiving.

Any thoughts as to why?
