Time Machine over Airport Extreme with USB Drive

I have had a usb Drive attached to my Airport Extreme in the past and I was able without problems to use Time Machine.

Now, in Mavericks - I cannot use this at all.
Do you know if it's intended to be like this or it's just a bug I am dealing with?

This is the last GM version of Mavericks.

Backup to a USB drive attached to the older pancake shaped Airport Extreme has never been supported by Apple and is unreliable. Some people get it to work and other have a lot of trouble with it.

It is supported in the newest tower shaped Airport Extreme.
