1680x1050 - Best Appearance 27fps
1680x1050 - Autodetect 55fps
1680x1050 - Best Performance 105fps

(Location with water, fire, smoke, grass. Expect higher frame rates when running around on land.
e.g. 2880x1800 - Best Appearance (looking elsewhere) 25fps image)

Remember you can tune the settings better manually. Picking higher textures but lowering shadows is much more appealing to the eye (and better fps) than medium textures and medium shadows...

Do you have Starcraft 2 by any chance.
CMD+option+F show fps and testing a 4v4 replay at 2x or 4x speed while looking at a big battle would be interesting. This is game is mostly CPU dependent. Would be nice to know how Iris Pro shuffles CPU+GPU resources around. Graphics settings shouldn't be too high obviously for this to work.

Were these tests done in osx or bootcamp?
Thanks

i did some quick measurements of a zerg base with a few structures and zerglings, and it does not perform very well - i'll try get some measurements of a battle like you want later if i get the time

For an iGPU, these numbers are exciting. Can't wait to see what the future holds. Great, great work.

Now, Apple/Sony/Others, please adopt the same strategy with battery tech. Give us machines with 3 day battery life!

I'd like to see a comparison of Dota 2 on OS X and Win.

hey, i just benched it for you and the results are crazy!

running in "Best for retina" (hidpi mode) gave worse fps and everything looked blurry!
running at native using a tool (i used setresx) gave better fps and everything looked crisp
running in bootcamp still gives the best fps

thank you very much actuallyinaus

If only i could knew iris pro's performance on X-Plane
I'm on the fence about buying the new base 15' with Iris Pro or the early 2013 base model with the 650m

I was playing X-Plane on my early 2011 with the crappy 6490m with only 256mb,so both iris pro and 650m will be light years better but i have a mental block about buying a macbook with only an igpu

Those look good thanks.
The nice thing about big replays is that you can adjust die cpu demand by just switching the speed slider form normal to faster to 2x and so on.
The best test would be a multiplay battle where two or more armies clash but I know it is really difficult to not forget to look at the fps counter in the action packed situations. Replays are predictable.

With my 2010 15" MBP Starcraft completely breaks down in any bigger battle. It is difficult to micro in 1-3 fps when 3 armies clash in a 4v4 battle.

Some other ideas for testing (interested specifically in OS X):
  • Temperatures, noise during gaming
  • Battery life during gaming
  • Heavier-duty games (Deus Ex, Witcher, Dragon Age etc.)

Hi, may I ask if I could play GTA IV in a decent resolution with good details and fluidity ? (Also if some of the 13 inch's users could tell me if the iris could run it too)
I'm not asking if I could play at max details & res, but I also want to play comfortably.
This is the only game I'm planning to play with the MBPr I will buy. (oh and maybe GTA V when it will be coming to PC but I'm not sure if I could run it, anyway!)

By the way have you tried disabling the steam overlay and the console for Dota 2? I've heard that they severely reduce the performance.

nope, i'll try disable steam overlay in the morning

exact temps should be easy to get, roughly the package sits at around 90C when gaming (compared to 75C cpu + 75C nvidia that others are reporting) so the two fans are dissipating less total heat in the iris only set-up. they are also quite quiet, you can hear them obviously, but you don't need to turn the volume up much to mask it, it is much quieter than the 13" airs or 13' cmbp's i have played dota on

battery is hard to tell, it would take time to let it just run down, calculating expected life from watt usage is possible, however the time can vary greatly (especially in windows) as you can pick performance vs quality, which will effect fps and battery

i have deus ex, witcher, witcher 2 so i can try some of those, any one you want specifically?, also look at the pastebin link at the bottom of my post it has a list of all the games i own

Thank you for your efforts once again :)

What about the enclosure temperatures? Is the keyboard above the cpu comfortably warm? Is the bottom of the laptop cool enough for "throne gaming"?:D

I have no game I'm specifically interested in, just curious to see the capabilities of gaming in OS X on an Iris Pro. Witcher 2 is rather power-hungry, so I guess it will be interesting to see its performance.

Great work. Thank you for the tip on setresx. I'm hoping this gives me a little boost in Diablo 3. It is a bit disappointing to see the gap between bootcamp and osx. I don't game very much so I'll probably just suffer through the osx performance, but a little part of me will always know there was a 10-20% boost to be had in bootcamp.

I have some game requests...
Could you test Diablo III, Skyrim, Borderlands 2, and Guild Wars 2?

Thank you so much for this thread OP, you're awesome :D
