With Mountain Lion I could just download the file, but how is it with Mavericks? At work I have a much faster internet connection so I would like to download the file, but what until I'm at home to run the upgrade.

Or is "download and install" a single process?

Far from here
It's works the same as Mountain Lion.

Once the download is completed, the Installer will launch automatically .

Just quit it (Cmd + q, or right click on the Dock icon / Quit).

The installer is an app, located in your Applications folder : "Installer OS X Mavericks".
(the name is "OS X Mavericks" during the download).

When you want to install, launch the Installer.
