He is wrong and probably doesn't have complete info. He is some correct T-Mobile info with link to thread.

T-Moblie Specialist said:
...You will need a Tmo SIM in the device and there will be an on screen prompt to set up an account with us. Once set up you will get 200MB of data for free monthly. There are also going to be data passes available so that if you go heavy on month you can ramp it up quickly. This all goes live on November 1, so there will be a lot more information for you guys to take a look at...

EDIT: Just found this on T-Mobile's Facebook page.

Do I have to be on a plan or a contract in order to get the free data?
In order to get the 200 MB of free Starter Data, you need to have an active Mobile Internet account with T-Mobile.

If you are a postpaid customer, you’ll need to have an On Demand data plan at minimum which is $0/mo. if you are a voice customer (after $10 line credit).

If you are a prepaid customer, you’ll need to activate a prepaid account. You do not have to a purchase data pass in order to access your free Starter Data. T-Mobile does not require an annual service contract.

Based on what so many people are reporting here is that you have to BUY a plan, and then you get the 200mb free.

Think through this folks. They are not just adding an extra 200mb. They are giving away 200mb to non-customers.

Please think this through. And do not mix this up with the process of buying an ipad on their plan.

This guy doesn't know what he is talking about. The 200MB is nothing for T-Mobile - the goal is to acquire customers. They have a good experience with their iPad and buy more data. Then they decide to switch their phones over

Think about this - why would T-Mobile give you 200MB on top of your 1GB plan? They would just increase the amount of data in the plans in the first place...

There you go with simple logic and smarts!

Really, why do people thing that you have to get a PAID plan to then add 200mb. Totally illogical.

If there is someone or somebody to doubt - it would be their retail stores. They're incentivized to sell plans. That's how they get their commission. I'm sure there's a few of them out there that are more than happy spread a bit of FUD until the plans are more clearly advertised and displayed.

Instead of making a thread or relying on a retail store worker who's probably trying to get you out of the store as fast as possible why don't you actually use Google. Or even the thread search built into the forums for information?

Too easy?

It should be emphasized that the plan you need to add costs $0 for postpaid customers.

Prepaid, the create account thing you can basically do by going to Settings - Cellular Data on your iPad.

Um, what it Actually says is that you have to have an "active mobile internet account" which is what happens when you make an account with them to purchase the iPad through T-Mobile....

Why is this so hard for some to understand?

I'm gonna guess that you don't have to be an a current T-Mobile customer to get the 200 MB free. Why would Apple advertise it on the iPad Air and rMini pages?

When you the service through your iPad (note: NOT going to a T-Mobile retailer), your service options are likely going to be the ones as noted on Apple's infographic. What other plans would they offer? The one's on Apple's infographic jump from 200 mb to 2 GB and it would be stupid of Apple to send customers to T-Mobile customer service hotline or to physical location just to set up service and pricing they're advertising.

And YES, you will need an account with T-Mobile, just like how you need a Verizon or AT&T postpaid account when you use Verizon or AT&T iPads. Even though you're getting 200 mb free, you still need to have a credit card on record in the event you go over 200 mb.

What's the point when they might not even have stock in store (and still not be trained to boot)? Faster option is to try it on T-Mobile online store come midnight.

I went to the site after midnight and I see no difference or any option to order an iPad. Nor have I received an updating notification which I signed up for in that pre-registration form.

The closest stores (2) are about an hour and a half away/ over the mountain, but I may just go there tomorrow.

Yup. It's not free. You have to pay $10 a month to be "on demand" and you'll get the 200 mb according to their site.

You can get it now. Tried signing up, and it went through up to the credit check page (which I didn't finish).

Some clarification now that T-Mobile's site has been updated.

$0-down, 0% APR is only valid if you have monthly On-Demand Data on the Simple Choice Plan. If you're already a current voice customer, you can get On-Demand Data for free. Non-voice customers will have to pay at least $10/mo if they want to take advantage of the Equipment Installment Plan (EIP). If you're already on AT&T Mobile Share and just wanted to go T-Mobile for the EIP, I suggest you just stick with AT&T Next. If you're not a T-Mobile postpaid customer, there's effectively no difference between T-Mobile's EIP and the AT&T Next Program aside from the installment length and monthly payments. Non-postpaid customers will effectively be paying T-Mobile $240 over the course of 24 months for the $0-down, 0% APR EIP. Totally not worth it in my book.

It seems like the EIP is not available on prepaid and T-Mobile is even charging an extra $10 for the SIM card kit if you buy from them. They don't seem to have stock either.

For those who just want the 200MB free data, I suggest buying the Verizon iPad from the Apple Store and just ordering a SIM card from T-Mobile.
