Hi all,

My 2009 8 Core Mac Pro has started having some worrying issues; Every time it starts up you need to CMD-Option-P-R otherwise it won't start. If you don't tun the fans will run wild for about 15mins.

After you have reset the P-Ram, it takes about 30 seconds for it to chime and then it runs fluently. After sleep the display doesn't seem to want to turn on either. I am running it though a Panasonic TV.

This is an error report, would anyone be able to make any sense of it? Im thinking that it may be a graphics card issue. Thanks in advance!

Surprise
Are you 100% sure that this is an 8800GT issue?

And if they aren't?? ;)

Sure seems like the culprit as those are flaky cards and caused similar issues before. But if you want a "guarantee" you need to take it to an Apple Service Provider.

I would like to know before i take it as being a student living in Portsmouth, its very difficult for me to get to Southampton as my closest store. These things aren't very light! Ild also like to know beforehand as i was about to order a new card anyway.

You don't need to take it to Southampton from Pompey. Even a student has an oven, a normal one not a microwave though. Take the card out the Mac Pro and bake it. Search my posts, I gave my precise baking instructions for 8800GT's a few months ago. You will need a screwdriver, rag to clean off the thermal paste, fresh paste and 4 tin foil balls on a baking tray - and oven gloves!

Ok, thank you for your help!

A combination of my post and MacVidCards point 3, remember he's cooking a dozen a time and you're only doing one. Remove the card, place in an anti static bag to carefully take to your mates and ground yourself onto a copper pipe like a radiator pipe to stop any static whenever you handle it and often. I prefer to let the card cool down slower in the oven with the door half open before moving it. It will smell and smoke a bit, depending on how much dust or thermal compound you have left on the card. Make sure the GPU is facing topside else your GPU will plonk itself on the baking tray underneath lol. Before heating the oven up adjust the foil balls on the tray by putting it in the cold oven to make sure it's as level as can be before baking and use a thick baking tray that doesn't bend. Then pre heat. That means the solder can reflow correctly when you cook it.

If you want more info just send me a PM. As you're a poor strapped up student like a few I help out I even don't mind giving you a ring when I can cos I've got an unlimited tariff.

Good luck regardless anyway fella.

Thank you all! At the moment it seems to be running ok. When my student loan EVENTUALLY comes in i will be purchasing a new card. This is just an annoyance that it has happened now, not when i was working before Uni :(
