I remember reading just after i bought it that the early 2011 17 mbp had problems putting 6Gb/s sata 3 drives in the optical bay. However I just want to put a sata 3 Samsung evo in the main bay and move the sata 2 hdd into the optical. Has anyone got any experience with doing this?

OWC seem to say its hit and miss :( (not sure how a samsung evo would fare or if the drive manufacturer even makes a difference)

SATA 3 in the main bay should be fine, and SATA 2 in the optibay should be fine as well. Just keep SATA 3 out of the optibay.

I've got the same early 2011 17" MBP. I put a Crucial M4 SSD in the main bay and moved the original HDD to the optibay. I have had zero issues. It is a fantastic machine. Wish they still made the old 17.

Thanks for that :)

However the m4 is SATA 2. Has anyone tried a sata 3 drive in the main bay?
