A Maunder Minimum?

Hmmm could get chilly the next couple of years...

The truth is the solar maximum — the name scientists give to the period when the sun’s activity levels are highest — might be the weakest peak seen in nearly 200 years.

Two historical periods of low solar activity — the Maunder Minimum (1645-1715) and the Dalton Minimum (1790-1830) — coincided with extended periods of global cooling, the heart of a 500-year cold period known as the Little Ice Age.

Or maybe not....

Sun activity is in free fall, but you shouldn’t expect a new little ice age

given our fast climate change, a chilling sun sounds beneficial (basing my point on nothing), but will it be fast enough to counteract our ongoing greenhouse effect?

edit--

scratch that

But Lockwood says we should not expect a new grand minimum to bring on a new little ice age. Human-induced global warming, he says, is already a more important force in global temperatures than even major solar cycles. Temperatures have risen by about 1.5 degrees since 1880, with more warming expected, according to the most recent assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

unlikely due to other factors, but I am hoping so - I am part penguin and long for chillier weather

(Still missing Calgary loads)

There's a blog by Paul Hudson I read regularly in terms of this. (I suspect this whole thread will wind up in PRSI.) It's UK centric but interesting and intelligent.
