Since Apple no longer uses then for authentication, why would you want to save them ??

Yeah but you can't downgrade anymore. Not past iPhone 4 anyway.

Seems you are not understanding this.

Since you cannot use SHSH to authenticate a firmware install in iOS7, you cannot use them to downgrade in iOS7.

Depending on your device, SHSH saved in iOS6 and iOS5 might be useful to downgrade given certain restrictions, but it is way too late to save them (except for certain devices if you are still on firmware lower than iOS7)
