Interesting to see the launch announcement today confirming a 4th April 2014 launch; what is more pleasing to see is that they are indicating a simultaneous Mac & PC release :)

Not sure what the game will eventually be like, but its good to see an anticipated and 'major' release come to Mac from the start.

Yeah I was glad about that too, has anyone on here been accepted for the Beta yet? I've signed up for the Mac one and got the confirmation e-mail, I was just wondering if the mac candidates had been chosen yet?

Hmm, does a simultaneous Mac release mean it's in a wrapper? I'd honestly rather wait for a real port. If it is a true port though, then kudos to Zenimax.

I was wondering the same. I guess we have the right to be suspicious with all these wrapper-ports, advertised as "mac games". Problem is that, if it is a wrapper, there is hardly any chance to release an official native port later on.

Sadly I've had beta invites for stress tests and something else, but been too busy to ever even do them... what I hear about the game makes it sound like its going to be a ton of fun though.

ESO Confirms its a Native OSX client

I sent an email to them specifically asking them if it was a native client or a wrapper port:

"Will the Mac version of The Elder Scrolls Online be a native OSX client or merely a wrapper? Native clients work, wrappers work marginally if at all. Most Mac gamers would rather run the game under Windows than tolerate the lousy performance using a wrapper under OSX. Be clear, crystal clear, that you are using a wrapper if it's not a native port. Anything less is outright dishonest."

Their reply (ESO English Support <ESO_Help@elderscrollsonline.com):

"Greetings!

Thank you for contacting The Elder Scrolls Online Team!

After discussion with the Prophet we are developing a native Mac client for The Elder Scrolls Online! If you have any other questions please let me know.

Thank you for your continued interest and support!

Warm Regards,
Edward @ The Elder Scrolls Online Team"

Thanks for this info. I have great expectations from this, and being a native Mac port seems there might be something big.

I don't think they have. I've been invited to two beta sessions so far, the last just before Thanksgiving, but the Mac client wasn't available yet.

Mac beta soon.

Just putting the finishing touches on things I promise.

I'm really interested in performance on Mac vs PC for this title. I have to hope that you are buying a license that won't be limited and allows you to install either client and only pay for one account.

We are shipping both on the same DVD etc.
There is also a download code in the box for all the modern
mac users without DVD drives.

Hi Mr. Bunny, glad to meet you! And thanks for the info if I can trust you speak from a position of authority. It might be good to throw a vendor tag on your account. :)

This is where I have been over the last few years... after leaving WoW after 2 years of play, I've drifted around from MMO beta to beta. Most of them have not been able to hold my interest. Lately Star Wars:TOR and Guild Wars 2 faded for me for a variety of reasons. Currently I am playing Final Fantasy XIV:ARR, but it too is starting to fade. It is a beautiful game and the main quest is excellent. I think that the idea of one toon being able to equip multiple classes is a great idea, but in the case of SE, they did not bother to put in enough quests to support multiple classes, and their FATE (group parties) are mostly a mindless, non-challenging, boring, way to gain XP. It might be an exaggerated feeling, but WoW dungeons used to knock me out with their design and beauty. In contrast FFXIV dungeons are bor-ing, but this is not a plea for high difficulty. I'm casual so some, but not too much challenge is important to me.

Among the stand alone RPGs, I think Elder Scrolls Oblivion is one of the best games I've ever played, stuck with it for all most 2 years. Skyrim too was excellent, so much so that I wrote an Adventures In Skyrim blog to record my adventures and perceptions. :) Skyrim dungeons are far more pleasing to the eye than FFXIV:ARR.

So I'm looking forward to giving EO a shot. The real issue for myself is the been-there-done-that feeling. Every MMO I've played lately are really the same thing- kill and collect, gather while killing, escort. New sights can push the BTDT away for a while, but not for too long. So the key seems to be innovation, something new to do in a new way. ;)

I'm also gearing up to jump into EQ:Landmark and see how building feels, individual and group building. I kind of love Minecraft after being turned on to it by my Grandson so Landmark grabbed my attention. It seems like something new, destructible environments and changes that just don't revert back to a default state and advanced building tools, something other than block by block. Anyway, who knows how it will turn out.

Right now I'm looking forward to both experiences... and I play World of Tanks in my spare time too. :p

How soon?

A few weeks away. If all goes well.

I will have to look at that.

Please sign up for the beta.
We need more Mac testers.

You promise? Do you work for the ESO people? Just curious.

Im in charge of the mac version of the game.

Port is probably not the right word.

Been actively working on it now for about 3+ years.

---

Performance.

Apple OpenGL 2.1 is slower then DX11 maybe 15-20% ( pretty normal )

Apple OpenGL 2.1 is maybe on Par with the DX9 renderer.

Apple OpenGL 2.1 is currently faster then OpenGL on windows.

Down the road we will move to OpenGL 3 or 4 and will see if that makes any difference.

Each of the above renders is a different code and shader path.
They do not doing things in the exact same way on each platform.

You can't really compare apples to apple heres so much is different at many levels.

That beings said the Mac version has excellent performance.

The game is very GPU bound as it has a deferred renderer.

Each pixel is over drawn many times.

As you increase the screen resolution every new pixel you add is probably being rendered 6 times over.

Thanks for the invite, but I've more or less sworn off beta testing in MMORPGs. It becomes tedious and I find that wipes and repetition tend to ruin the game for me when it finally hits retail. However thumbs up for retail! :)

excuse me

but i can't read this anymore.

Diablo 3: weeks before the beta started you could find official comments like:
it runs really smooth, optimized for mac. native mac client as wow and SC2...

Guild wars 2: we will bring out GW2 for mac. i have a mbp and i love it. i love macs. the game runs smooth as butter...

every time i read stuff like that from officials i would love to have the chance to play their game 1 year later with them on a mac.

please be honest. you are talking about open gl 2.1 DX 9 and so on. most of the game designers are poor ducks.

apple is slowing down their machines since i can remember. the drivers for macs are crap. every new os slows down your machine a little bit.

years ago i began to follow the community and with every os and update of the os you will find questions like these in mac forums:

does the new os / update improve game performance
how much faster are the new drivers
does the game XY run better with the news os/update

and so on...

elder scrolls will be a good game. i wish this everyone working on this title. but you can rip a leg off - apple will never ever give you machines to run this game you intent it to run.

go to Blizzard and Gw2 forums. search for a game name and mac performance. you will always find the same stuff.

macs are not good in gaming... sadly

I hear you and feel the same way.

I have been shipping Mac games since the Mac Plus
So about 20 years now.

Games on the Mac has just not been a focus of Apples...
well at least till IOS 7 and 10.9.

Apple has an actual game teams now building much needed tech.
