I was one of those people who was very reluctant to get an iPad. Because unlike a smartphone and a laptop, I just couldn't see where an iPad would fit into my life. I didn't think tablets were useless, but it seemed like everything a tablet is best for would be something I'd prefer to do on the Mac anyway.
I kind of bought it not expecting to use it much, but now that I actually have one I'm using it tons. Had it since mid-November and I'm even using it for the bulk of my writing/other productive things. There are a lot of great iPad-exclusive apps out there, and that's only getting better as the years go by.
