MenuMeters 0.5 will display memory, network, CPU, and disk activity right in your menu bar. This is the best monitoring app I have seen so far, it is very easy to configure and is very neat taking up none of your desktop as it is all kept in your menu bar.

how much cpu does the app itself take?

It's not actually an app. You install it by dragging a .prefpane into your Library then it just starts to run when you tell it to do so in your System Prefs, I cannot see it listed when I do a "top" command in terminal.
