How long do MacBook Pro hard drives typically last?

I have a mid-2009 aluminium unibody 17-inch MacBook Pro, 320GB 7200rpm hard drive.
SMART status is still verified, and I periodically back up the hard drive, but for planning, I'd like to have an idea of when this type of hard drive tends to reach end of life.

Well, its just like any other hard drive. Backblaze has published some reliability data; according to their data, approximately 1 of 4 drives fail within the first 4 years; extrapolated, 50% of the drives would fail within 6 years.

That said, the most reasonable thing is to treat any storage medium as if it can fail any minute.

My 500GB 7200rpm drive in my early-2011 15" MBP blew up within 2 years.

I've got a Samsung 840 Pro 512GB silently running in there now :D
