Two missing features from Messages

These may have disappeared in Mountain Lion, but I have certainly noticed them in Mavericks.

The first is the ability to send an SMS. This used to be available from the File menu. Now it seems iMessage is the only option. I am more inclined to believed this disappeared in Mountain Lion.

The second is the ability to create alerts for when buddies come online (or perform other actions). In previous versions, you would highlight a buddy's name and go to Buddies, then Show Info. You could create alerts based on that buddy's behaviors (going on or offline, etc.). I believe this was still present in Mountain Lion, but I'm not sure.

Has anyone else noticed these? Am I missing a way to send SMS or to create alerts for buddies?

I don't recall Messages ever supporting SMS outside of communicating with iOS devices via iMessages (which is still does).

I've never seen iChat/Messages do SMS. But definitely a lot of notification options disappeared in 10.9, I submitted feedback at http://www.apple.com/feedback and hoping to see some of those capabilities re-added in future updates.

With iChat, you can send messages to .Mac and AIM users, as well as cellular phone users. Note: You must be signed in to iChat with a MobileMe (mac.com or me.com) or AIM account to do this (not Jabber or Bonjour).

MobileMe is gone, so if it still works I guess it would require AIM?

Yes, it would send from my mac.com account, which was associated with my AIM account, as well—so I'm not really sure which service it was using, but the people I would send SMS to would see it was from my mac.com account (which Messages still supports). To send an SMS, I believe you just went to File->Send SMS. You would just type in a phone number and then send. It no longer works unless you are sending to a phone number that has iMessage. It was nice for people like me who don't have a text-messaging plan, and also much faster to type on a keyboard than cell phone.
