A sad loss. Don & Phil's harmonies were impeccable. They did some of their best work after their 80's reunion.
'Born Yesterday' and 'EB84' are arguably their best albums.
Their early work was reportedly an inspiration to Lennon/McCartney.
And Graham Nash (Crosby/Stills/Nash).
And Linda Rondstadt.
And Bob Dylan.
And Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.
And Pete Townshend.
Nash said it best: When the Everly Brothers sang together, there was something in their voice that made two voices into one voice that created a sound that I don't think is possible with unrelated singers.
I tend to agree. The closest you could get to them that were family would probably be the Nelsons (Matthew/Gunnar), but not even the Jacksons or Isleys could compare, as far as singing families go.
