Hindsight is a beautiful thing...

and so is this. I stumbled on it while checking out the Guide page on fake mockups, and got a laugh out of some of the reactions to the introduction of the iPod.

"Great just what the world needs, another freaking MP3 player. Go Steve! Where's the Newton?!"

"Sounds very revolutionary to me.
hey - heres an idea Apple - rather than enter the world of gimmicks and toys, why dont you spend a little more time sorting out your pathetically expensive and crap server line up?
or are you really aiming to become a glorified consumer gimmicks firm?"

"I'd call it the Cube 2.0 as it wont sell, and be killed off in a short time...and it's not really functional."

"All that hype for an MP3 player? Break-thru digital device? The Reality Distiortion Field™ is starting to warp Steve's mind if he thinks for one second that this thing is gonna take off."

I enjoyed that immensely. Thanks... and the flames.

Some people were spot on and some, who are still around and gave remarkably ignorant views even then, shall remain nameless.

I never had much of an opinion on the iPod when it was introduced because I'd never heard of it at that stage.

The first one I ever saw was a colleague with a 2nd Gen one, and when I saw it, I knew I would eventually get one.

Roll on MWSF — here's hoping something will happen that will whip up a frenzy on these boards.

If something like the iPod came out today, it'll certainly run more than 6 pages. Probably in the neighborhood of 100+ pages. 2001, wow that was so long ago.

I thought it was a cool device back then, but way too expensive at nearly $600 CDN. I could buy a nice PC for that amount of money.

Hah, hilarious. I guess back then they were holding their breath for a G4 Powerbook next Tuesday.

Mmmm. APPL is already down $1.00...

Looks like the markets aren't looking too favorably on Apple's new forays into the digital device market.
Of course the iPod is cool, neat, whatever. You wouldn't expect anything less from Apple. But I agree with most on this forum. $400 is simply too much in the present economic climate. One other thing. I'd like to know what their margins for the iPod are...
And just think they're now up to $70

That was a very interesting read. One wonders how much Steve has planned ahead.

After Apple goes belly up for getting in over their heads in the consumer music business, and forgetting that they are a computer company, people are going to be pointing at this thread and laughing at how shortsighted we were back in 2006.

Maybe Steve Jobs has a muse.

Apple will never go belly up with a muse.

No, person or company can determine the success or failure of a product or service. If you think otherwise you are dreaming.

Steve Jobs, also wanted the iPod to be a "Macintosh Only" mp3 player. Only when he decided to open it to the windows world and the introduction to the iTMS, did it ever make big waves in the industry.

If the iPod was only "Macintosh Only" it would have been a failure as the user base of Macintosh to Windows just tilts to the Windows side.

Sweet and lucrative rewards serve as the inspiration for the necessary vision that enables the rest of us to enjoy the products which spring forth.

IIRC, the iPod was well on it's way to reaching "must buy" status before Apple released a windows compatible version.
