streaming video from synology over internet

anyone have any experience on what apps are the best for this?

i have a synology server and movie collection (some with external subtitles) and would like to be able to stream to wherever i am.

obviously the more video and sound codecs it supports the better. iphone and ipad support.

ds video transcodes videos but thats cpu intensive on synology and sometimes it hasnt worked quite well enough for me.

vlc seems to want to download and ive tried some others as well.

the newest vlc seems to be able to stream now but it dosent support srt subtitles and some folders (connected via ftp) dont appear as they should
