Welcome folks to this weeks photo thread!

Theme: Encouragement.
I wanted to pick a theme that is important to all of us yet can be interpreted in many different ways.

Rules:
1. Please submit only one photo per contest.

2. Please do not comment on photos until after the judging has taken place.

3. The contest runs for exactly one week, starting NOW! (see time/date stamp at the start of this thread)

4. At the end of the week, The Judge (last week's Winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible. (Judge has 24 hours to make decision)

5. The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme)

* To see all of our past contests please see the sticky thread here *

Good luck to everyone!

Banana Rum Smoothie?

I scoured my photo collection looking for even the most tenuous link to this week's theme, and this is as close as I could get.
Tommy, the barman at the Iguana Bar in St. Thomas, encouraging us to have yet another of his fine frosty concoctions.
His mixology skills and the Caribbean heat meant we needed very little encouragement indeed.

^ LOL. Paul, we think alike. :)

Unless there are objections, I think I will retain the current deadline. The contest ends in a few hours (more or less) so I do encourage you to submit a picture if you have one. I might have made the theme a bit challenging but there are still plenty of entries.

Weekly Photo Contest: February 24 - March 3 (Encouragement)

I guess I'll go... It has a story, too ;)

The image is only partially successful in conveying just how much encouragement it took to go down this slope. It's the steepest I've ever done, and icy (East coast is not known for deep pow)! I snowboard, and never tried skiing, but it seemed to me that skiers going down this trail had a certain semblance of control in their descent. Like, some could pause midway and think about life and universe and everything. On a snowboard, if I tried any braking manoeuvres, I'd be on my behind, sliding uncontrollably. So my partner says, just point it mostly down, don't try to brake hard, you'll be fine, everyone else is faster anyway so you won't hit anybody.

So I point my board down and go! And within a second or two I'm passing everyone that was halfway down when I started. Nerves of steel is the only thing that saved me, because I managed to go through with the whole thing without any incident. Except for the loud scream of "You said they will be faste-e-er!"

And then we got back to the lift and went up again. And again. And again ;)

I really couldn't come up with anything for this week. I do remember this session...while trying out some new Alien Bees (10 years ago!) my wife "encouraging" my 3 year old son to relax and sit still. Anyone who has tried to take children's portraits knows what I mean:) Now he's almost 13 and we try to get him up and moving!;) Good luck everyone!

The contest is now closed. Many thanks for the entries this week. Judging will commence after the consumption of a beverage.

I may have made this week's contest a little too tricky but there were some nice entries.

Even though the composition is a little too buy for my tastes, I like several individual elements here. The juxtaposition of the man handing out flyers for McDonalds against thin tall guy who's walking the other way and doesn't care. I like the "Look Right" words while the guy is looking to his right, our left. I even like the Dark Knight sign on the far bus.

I love these quotes and I remember it being explained beautifully in the Matt Damon movie, We Bought a Zoo. They are very interesting words to live up to. Putting my affection for the quotes aside, I first looked at your image and thought: dog tags > soldier > fallen soldier. Obviously because they are dog tags but perhaps because they are lying on the ground as well. I keep wanting to tilt my head when I view this, making me think a different crop might work better. While the position of the tags look 'real,' I would be curious what it would look like if you experimented with a different composition. A couple of stronger highlights on the tags would be interesting as well.

I've always found cheerleaders to be an interesting concept and this photo illustrates why. I suppose their goal is to fire up the crowd but, as seen here and all to often elsewhere, the crowd doesn't pay much attention. I really enjoyed the composition of the isolated and somewhat lonely cheerleader, rising above the crowd in the hopes to encourage/inspire. My, it's lonely up there. Because of your composition, my eye moves around the photo really well.

This is nice in its simplicity and the story is clear. The leading lines move your eye to the primary subject. I would wonder what this image would look like without the lone hand on the right, and maybe a vignette pushing your eye within the frame and a tiny, tiny bit more cropping in on the left. It seems like it could use a bit more contrast, primarily on the dude jogging in. You decided to put your focus on the team rather than the jogger which is an interesting choice as well.

This is really nice in B&W, as it is reminiscent of marches in the past. Unlike some of those marches, however, this one looks to encourage others to Read to Succeed. It's always interesting to look at the faces in those who march because it can capture a tangible mood that might surround the cause of the march. This is no different here. Smiling, young faces, one person wearing a ministry shirt and escorted comfortably by a church van. The sign and, more particularly, the girl's eyes captivate our attention here.

I like this as well. We are far enough behind them to hear anything, so body language counts. I would hope the coach is whispering words of encouragement as the player gets ready to take the field. This is a nice, simple capture that tells a nice, simple story.

I appreciate you scouring your collection and you came up with something that makes me want to visit the Caribbean and enjoy a cold, frosty drink. It doesn't look like it would take much to entice the tourists to cozy up to the bar here.

That's a great story and a great vista. You're certainly braver than I am. I can't tell if you're on a momentary break from snowboarding to absorb the great view or have fallen and can't get up. You have excellent detail in the whites and, while the blacks have some detail, opening it up a little more in pp might help a bit. Great view though. Makes me want to go skiing again (except for the bone-chilling cold part.)

Portraits are never easy, especially with children but your family's sense of joy is clearly evident. Whatever you were doing to encourage him to relax for the portrait seemed to work. I would wonder what a tighter, rule of 3rds crop would look like. I'd probably pull it in tighter towards your wife's shoulder and see how it looks.

Thank you to everyone who found something to enter this week's tough challenge.

jkramerbob, it's up to you to create the next contest theme.

Well done guys. I think this was quite a difficult theme this week. Due to work commitments, I wasn't really able to shoot anything except this rubbish iPhone effort (hense not entering it!). They were encouraging me to spend money, so I got a D7100! Can't wait to get out and use it. Looking forward to the next one.

Congrats winners & contestants, and thanks filmbuffs for your input
my favorite ones this week were both jkramerbob's & pmexperience's

composition wise, it was all done in camera.

as you can see below, there are two models and the toughest deal was to light them both correctly with the key light on the left so as for the angle to seem natural enough and adequate for both. secondary lighting was the room's ambient to fill in the shadows.

second model was magnified with a thin magnifying lens, which due to heavy use, had developed those signs of wear & tear, which I came to like in the final composition since they added texture to the distorted reflection.

posing was tricky and time consuming as these models are quite small and stiff. blue tack & a cap lens were employed to keep the frame and models standing. reflected model was raised a bit on order to draw attention to the torso, which is what anorexics primarily set their gaze at.

PP for colour correction, contrast & vignetting

have attached setup & some of the first test shots

canon 6d, ef 100mm f/2,8 is L | 100mm, 1/30, f/16, iso 12800 - subject distance 590mm

to the next contest

AFB, I tried to buy you some time, but you had already bought the 7100!! Happy Snaps!

Good to see the story behind the shot. Having used these models in the past I realise how awkward they are to pose. I (like most) genuinely thought it was a mirror and one model.

Thanks filmbufs for the extensive feedback. I had the same top 3 also, although having now seen the work behind needfx's photo, I have to say he gets a few extra kudos points there.

Looking forward to the next one.

Help!!!

First thank-you filmbufs for the great analysis of each photo. Now, for the first time I would like to ask for some assistance. I just realized that I will be out of the country when the next contest ends and I will be in an area with limited Internet access.

Could pmxperience please initiate and judge the next contest???

This seems fair to everyone as I don't believe I could review and respond to the contest photos in a timely manner. PLUS, I like pmxperience photo better than mine this week (and I'm not just saying that)!
