Password for Windows File Sharing

I just purchased a powerbook running OS X 10.2, and it's working great! But I am having a lot of problems lately trying to figure out the Windows file sharing with MAC. I enabled the windows file sharing in the system preferences. I am able to see my MAC from the Windows PC side when I go to network neighborhood. When I try to log on to my MAC i get a screen asking me for the password. I tried every password I can think of and still I am not able to log on, I can see my mac, but not able to log onto it. Meanwhile from my powerbook side, I am not able to see any computers from the Network Icon. Does anyone have any idea how I can solve this problem?
Thanks
sam

What OS is the window machine running? You will need to log into the Mac with a username and password for a user on the mac. If you are running a window NT derivative (NT, 2000, XP) it will try and log in with your NT username by default.

The Network icon is not like Network Neibourhood in windows. It is not a network browser. Try activating the finder, opening the Go menu and click Connect to Server.

Have you enabled your account to logon from windows?
Go Sys prefs > Accounts > Your name > edit user, and tick off "Allow user to lo in from Windows" at the bottom. Then on your PC try to map the drive, it should prompt for a username and password, enter your Mac short username and password.

Also here is a guide for PC-Mac networking that I have written up in another thread, but if you still can't get it to work this could be relevent.

OK, lets go start to finish:

What you need:
Both machines connected to each other via some kind of ethernet.
Assign an IP to each machine, e.g >
Mac: 192.168.0.1
PC: 192.168.0.2
Subnet masks on both of: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: shouldn't matter

Now disable any firewalls running on both boxes (inc. the built in one's in each OS).

Now check that from each machine you can ping the other.
Mac: applications > utilities > terminal > type "ping 192.168.0.2 -c 1"
PC: start > Run > type "cmd" then return > type "ping 192.168.0.1"
If both reply then both machine are seeing each other OK.

Now on your XP box share a folder. Do this by right clicking on a folder and then selecting "properties", go to the sharing tab and enter a share name (without any spaces).

Now on the Mac go Finder > Go > Connect to server and enter:
smb://pcworkgroupname;pcusername:pcpassword@pcipaddress/sharename
This should now mount the PC share on you Mac and you can now copy stuff over to it so that you can then copy it back to your new Mac HDD later on.

Hope this helps. :)
