MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo Technical Specs

MacBook Pro
-------------
Intel Dual Core 1.67 and 1.83 GHz, both with 15.4" 1440 x 900 screen
RAM: DDR-2 667 MHz SODIMMs, 2 sockets, max. 2 gb
- Stock configurations ship with a single 512 or 1 Gb SODIMM, leaving one empty socket (good)
- PC5300 667 MHz RAM not exchangeable with any other Mac RAM
Dual-link DVI can run 30" LCDs
ATI Mobile Radeon X1600 graphics
Serial ATA 2.5" hard drive, cannot swap drive mechanisms with any Powerbook or iBook.
ExpressCard/34 PCI-e- derived expansion slot externally
Both analog and optical audio Inputs AND Outputs (good)

No PCMCIA card -- ExpressCard/34 instead - means no expansion cards immediately available, and existing PCMCIA SATA/Audio/Firewire/Wireless/LAN cards cannot be used.
No Firewire 800
No Modem -- USB modem optional
No Dual-Layer Superdrive
Cannot run Classic (OS9) Programs

Notes: On the website Apple makes great performance comparisons with "Previous shipping G4 15 inch model" but doesn't specify which model. What are you hiding, Apple?

Apple has leapfrogged most of the industry with RAM -- virtually all high end Wintel laptops have a maximum 533 MHz DDR-2 SODIMM memory architecture.

With this model, Apple have signed the death warrant for modems and PCMCIA in Macs. Dropping of Firewire 800 will be troubling to Mac users doing digital audio and video.

Edit: (credit to Escher) Apple have obviously had their fill of replacing power supplies and Powerbook AC jacks because of broken cords and cracked solder joints internally, so the magnetically attached AC power plug is a good idea. Points to Apple for being the first company to come up with something different here.

They specify here what they're comparing it to.

Err it does.

It says 15-inch PowerBook G4 1.67GHz PowerPC G4 as it's baseline.

The one thing it doesn't mention is battery life. That seem ominous to me.

Which one? The one with DDR PC2700 333 MHz memory or the HD screen one with DDR-2 533 MHz memory?
The state a memory benchmark of over 6x the bandwidth... the choice of baseline would be somewhat significant here...

"Testing conducted by Apple in December 2005 using preproduction 15-inch MacBook Pro units with 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo; all other systems were shipping units."

I take this to mean the ones that were shipping as of December 2005, but I could be wrong.

High school senior point of view

Dont care bout PCMCIA or the EC 34/54
Firewire 800 always has some type of issue
I still use Dial Up even though I have a powerbook so im screwed
Dual-Layer is okay but wheres the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD superdrive?
Classic? Thats what my 1Ghz TiBook is for.
No S-Video...bad at home since I hook up the laptop to watch anime. okay at school since they are upgradeing each classroom to a video projector.

I think I could live without the Dual-layer and S-video since im not a big person on media. Back up everything on to iPod, that why i bought an iPod. I think s-video died beacuse apple thinks people have HD displays with DVI inputs.

Does anyone know how long the battery is?

"Power Up With MagSafe
The new power adapter with MagSafe connector is designed to magnetically guide your cord into place and disconnect smoothly if someone (else) trips over it."

I found it VERY NEAT!!!!!!!!!

The new specs are intriguing...

I have the current G4PB, and am in the process of choosing an external HD for backup - (was going to get a FW800 version)

Also want a Cardbus CompactFlash card reader to speed up digital photography. It seems that Apple don't care about such a CF reader in the new PB, as one would require a 54mm Express card slot

In any case, are Cardbus and FW800 on their way out?
