I have recently had some problems with overheating when running games, and I have installed a fan control application. If I want good performance and low temperatures during gaming I have to set the fan speed to around 4500-6000 RPM. Would such prolonged usage damage or wear down the fan?

It absolutely would wear down your $20 fan to have it running high.

It absolutely would wear down your $650 motherboard to have it running low.

Take a guess what I advise every customer here, when they ask that question "so, how can I avoid spending my paycheck here again?"

Just kept your Macbook on 3600rpm minimum.

Maximum Speed when doing CPU / GPU intensive task.

The fan will not wear so easy. I kept this configuration for years and I don't see any problem at all. Never overheat at all.

I think even you don't use any speed control, the fan will automatically adjust the speed itself.
