External Device Dilemma

When inserting a Flash Drive in my iMac it does not show on the desktop or in the finder. My other Mac's (MacBook & MacBook Pro) show the device on the desktop & Finder. To use the flash drive on the iMac I have to go to "Spotlight, type in the name, the spotlight locates it and I can then use it. Also I have to use the same procedure to eject it.
Any suggestions ?
