iPad Airplay with lightning connector

Ok.... I'm confused.

iPhone 5s, j/b of course, 7.0.6... Without being on the network, I can use Airplay while connected to my iMac (using Reflector) with the lightning cable.

Cue in my iPad Air. Using 7.0.4, but can't use Airplay in the same manner in which I do with the iPhone 5s.

Any ideas?
