Greetings.

I just purchased an iMac 2011 on eBay the other day (still waiting for it to arrive). I was wondering, could I have it boot up on an external SSD drive using Thunderbolt, and if so what are some good drive?

Certainly it will boot on a Thunderbolt drive. I use a MiniPro Thunderbolt SSD on mine to test different operating systems. Thunderbolt also supports TRIM.

I also use a Crucial M500 SSD that I added internally to my 2011 iMac. The Crucial is faster than the external, which apparently holds a Sandisk SSD. Others have other SSD preferences.
