Isn't this about over-due... ?

Sure its a "landmark" *I guess from Apple's standpoint* of a OS X, but so was iOS 6 GUI....

However. Apple realized this got old and needed an update... I'm sure soon enough we will see a GUI update to Apple TV too... although there are more regular, Finder icon "face" in the dock as bee round since year dot...

Any chance for then to update this at all in the any ones future ?

You really can't compare an icon with an entire GUI. One that I wouldn't call iconic in any way. About the only reason to change the icon would be out of accuracy which isn't the case nowadays.

Honestly, why would they need to do this?

I'm old school, I'd be very disappointed to see them drop or change it.

I'll only be happy if they change it to this:

No.

Why replace an iconic icon when there are plenty of ways to improve OS X without touching the UI?

I want fixed and refined Apple Maps, Siri, Finder, iCloud, iWork '13 and some actually cool stuff, not yet another stupid pointless arbitrary flat reskin.

Yes Apple should.
This this is something that should be left for OS 11 or whatever comes after OS X.

The big problem is - what do you change it to? If you're going to change it, it should either be to something "iconic", or something "descriptive".

The Finder icon is pretty "iconic" already, so replacing it with another "iconic" icon would be odd. (What would they replace it with? An Apple logo? That would be VERY confusing.) While Apple could come up with something new, the Finder logo is already their near-universal "Mac" identifier.

If you're going to replace it with something "descriptive", what do you do? A 'desktop' metaphor? A file folder? While I'm sure Apple could come up with something, it would likely be hard to have it be unambiguously the Finder. (Note also that if they were going to do that, they might as well go ahead and rename it, since it isn't really the "finding app" any more, either.)

So the OP was kind of right - they did update the icon. And isn't he just adorable? :p

What do you all think of the change? I don't really mind it, although he is smiling just a tad *too* much...

They didn't really update him though. They just sent him back to Mac OS 7.

And oh my gosh, it's annoying that like 50 people all decided to change their avatar to some form of the Finder after the new look was announced.

This is a folder icon from system 7, it looks more like the older one.
