Will Mavericks run OK on this Macbook Pro?

Should do. It runs well on my 2007 MBP. Have you considered increasing your RAM to 4GB or 6GB and upgrading to an SSD? It will do wonders for your MBP.

On second thoughts, it looks like your MBP is the late 2006 model, so not upgradable beyond 3GB of usable RAM. I assumed that all Core 2 Duo MBPs could take at least 6GB of RAM.

The 2.33 GHz Macbook Pro dates to 2006. The latest operating system it can run is 10.7.5 Lion. In order to install that you'd need to purchase and install 10.6 Snow Leopard first.
Because you're only running 10.5.1, you should immediately at a minimum run Software Update from the Apple menu and install the updates it finds. This will get you to 10.5.8 which worked far better than 10.5.1 but is still significantly out of date and is no longer supported by Apple. There will be a number of other updates to install, and you should repeat the Software Update process until it reports that everything is up to date.

I have an old MacBook Pro 2.16GHz Coreduo, circa Spring 2007, and the latest OS it can run is 10.75. Not sure why Apple orphaned it as other Macs with the same processor and 4GB RAM can be upgraded. Neverthless, Lion works fine on it and Apple still supports Safari and iTunes with upgrades for now anyway.
I have an early-2011 15" with a 512GB Samsung 840 Pro and it boots up in just 11 seconds, with instant app launches.
Quite a number of people who say that Mavericks is slow don't realize that the spinning HDD is the reason it's slow.
My ancient 2009 MacPro (2.66 Quad) burns rubber under Mavericks. Boot is mere seconds and apps fly. Of course it has a SSD and 24GM RAM. On the other hand, I upgraded an old 2007 iMac Coreduo with only 2GB RAM and a dog slow HD and Mavericks crawled. I revered back to Lion and all was well again.
How does it struggle to run? Is it sluggish? I also have a late-2011 MBP, but I upgraded the internal HD to a hybrid Momentus XT hard drive (7200RPM, is a hybrid solid-state drive), so my experience is a bit better overall.
should run fine, I've got an old 2009 17 inch MBP, and it works quite nicely. I do notice however that the spinning HDD is much slower than what Apple had intended for Mavericks... Let's see what the WWDC unveils in context to new MBP's and their SSDs.
