I have a new MacPro and will be running all of my application software on my 512GB SSD. My LightRoom5 and PS CS6 CC data will all live on a CalDigit T3 external Thunderbolt drive. It has three 2TB drives and I can chose to run all three as JBOD ( gives me 6TB storage ), all three as RAID 1 ( Gives me only 2TB storage ) or 2 drives as RAID 1 with the third as JBOD for backup. (Still 2 TB storage )

I have only used hardware RAID with CalDigit and it has worked flawlessly for years. The T3 uses software RAID... specifically Apples OSX 10.9.3 RAID disk utility. I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with software RAID and how reliable it is? I know that SoftRAID is about to release a software RAID that will allow running RAID 5 on a 3 disk array. This would give me 4TB of storage.

Any opinions?

Thanks.....
