Just last night I shut down my laptop just like I always did. But when I woke up this morning, my computer won't load anymore after the blue screen. I tried to safe boot, but right in the middle of the loading, my MacBook turned off, which i assume was a battery problem because my laptop was at a very low charge last night when I turned it off. I charged it for a bit, then I tried turning on my laptop again and the message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again." greeted me. In the background it says:

Try booting into Recovery Mode by holding CMD R at boot. Then open Disk Utility and repair your hard drive!

Okay, so I had my MacBook checked earlier and it appears that the OS got corrupted. I don't think there's a fix for that other than reformatting the MacBook. Is it possible to take my files from my hard rive before reformatting though? I have some important documents there which I haven't put on my external hard drive yet and I really don't want to lose them.

I brought my computer to my IT friend a few days ago because I couldn't find my OS X installer disk. He said that my hard drive was corrupted so he backed up my data and installed Mac OS X 10.9.3 on it. He returned my MacBook just this morning and it's as good as new. I'm not sure if there's any other solution but this was probably the best option for me since I needed my MacBook to start working again as soon as possible.
