Can someone explain the fundamental difference between the two? From the settings page here are the descriptions:

iCloud Photo Library - Automatically upload and store your entire library in iCloud to access photos and videos from all of your devices.

My Photo Stream - Automatically upload new photos and send them to all your iCloud devices when connected to Wi-Fi.

So from what I can gather, the only real difference is video?

iCloud photo library = 1 seamless library.
My Photo Stream = 2 libraries. Your camera roll and the My Photo stream.

Does deleting image from your iPhone automatically delete it in the cloud as well?

I'm trying to understand how beneficial would it be paying the $0.99/month for 20GB storage for those with 16GB iPhones.

Like if they don't want all the pics stored locally but access them when ever needed, let me know if this is something you have tested or can test (I haven't updated my iPhone with iOS8 beta yet, I'm planning to get a another one as I cannot do it on my primary device as I need it working 100% all the time)

Also photo stream would only allow 1000 pictures to be upload at one time and then after a month they were removed from the service.

And also with photo stream the pictures stay up there for 30 days only (i'm pretty sure its only 30) after that they purge

with icloud photo they are there permanently or until you remove it from one of your devices.

Yes deleting it from your phone will delete it from the iCloud photo library. You get that warning when you delete a photo. However, I did see this on the Apple website:

"It can automatically keep the original high-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and leave behind lightweight versions that are perfectly sized for each device. "

Sounds like it will keep a mobile optimized version on your phone and full resolution in iCloud.

Can I replace iPhoto/Aperture with this?

I want *all* my photos available on *all* my  devices, *all* the time , with some simple sorting by years, events, maybe faces, maybe places.

If it can do this, I'm happy. I don't need Aperture or Lightroom, just an Apple Flickr equivalent...

Steve.

Actually, if it means I don't have to back-up my own photos I'll be happy.

Photos are the only thing I don't have backed-up to the cloud.

Steve.

Basically yeah. There should be a new photos app for the Mac coming out this fall to do that. I am using Revel right now to do the same but its 6.99 a month. This will be perfect for me.

Can somebody explain me how this works or if it is even working right now? I activated iCloud Photos they seemed to have uploaded (about 300MB of storage) and my Photos app still says 300MB of storage, so my iPad still has the high-resolution photos. I only use one device on iOS 8 so I can't really test anything, does anybody know how this really works? Could it be that the original phone stores the original photo and the other devices store the lightweight version?

I hope there will be a way to store a backup of your photos locally on your mac as well, just for piece of mind. I'm sure the cloud is safe and has backup upon backup but still.....

Has anyone turned on iCloud Photo Library? I have and i'm not even sure what its done? (Apart from disable my PhotoStream)

Would be good if Apple sorted out the "Photo" app on Yosemite so we can see it working

With this iCloud library they have made it a lot confusing ..
1. My photo stream- uploads your photos(only last 1000) for 30 days, then it'll get deleted( correct me if I'm wrong) .. It doesn't count against your storage... And all the uploaded photos (and I think videos, again correct me if I'm wrong) are available on all your devices.. For the 30 days during which I need to store them somewhere ...

2. Icloud library uploads and stores all your photos and videos taken by the device camera on iCloud and you can see it on all your devices, .. It has a maximum 5GB free which is shared by your device backup, iCloud drive. No time limit..

3. If iCloud library is enabled, my photo stream is disabled( correct me if I'm wrong)

My questions...

4. If iCloud library is enabled, does the photos stay on my device + iCloud (like my photo stream) or are they only on iCloud ???...

5. If iCloud library is enabled, and my phone backup is also via iCloud, does the camara roll get backed up too?? If that's the case then there is double storage usage for the same 5GB .. One my iCloud library, and one on my phone backup ...

This is all a little confusing.

Do you think both features will survive? I am guessing that "my photo stream" is replaced with icloud library when ios 8 ships.

Huge difference is that Photo Stream had a count and date limit. Your personal stream was only 1000 photos etc. Shared streams were the same per stream and you only got 100 streams. If you were sharing photos with others who were also adding items you could max those out.

iCloud library at least appears to be basically limitless, up to the amount of storage you have bought. So if you can fit 200k photos in your space, have at it.

We don't know the exact details yet behind this, but you will only see 1 continuous library, of which will be completely available in iCloud and all your devices. Maybe the phone will store all the originals until it runs out of space (and then starts to delete the oldest ones locally - but still available in iCloud and still visible on the phone and all devices), OR maybe it'll keep only a specific amount cached locally, and slowly replace the local ones with phone optimized resolution & size but full size & resolution available in iCloud. Basically this is still unknown.

When iCloud Photo library is enabled, you no longer have a Camera Roll. iClould Photo library will be the primary location of all the photos you take and will be kept in iCloud as well. Considering this, I think it's safe to say they won't store them in your iCloud storage through the iCloud photo library and then again through iCloud backups. I would guess that when doing a backup you won't see photos as an option as they'll already be in iCloud.

Honestly, this is going to be such a nice solution to photos. My iPhone only has so much space to store photos, I usually connect it to my Mac once every few weeks to copy all the photos off, sort them into albums and events in iPhoto, but it becomes such a manual process, and is really starting to feel archaic. Now I have a photo library isolated to iPhoto on my Mac, and not easily visible anywhere else. The beauty of this iCloud photo library is that all photos & video you take will go into one continuous stream that is synced everywhere (iPhone, iPad, Mac, iCloud web). All content will be visible everywhere. No more plugging and manually importing photos to iPhoto and deleting them off the device. Now I'll be able to pick up my iPad, sort some recent photos I've taken into albums, and they'll be visible like that everywhere (iPhone, iPad, Mac, web).

This is from the Apple iOS 8 page on apple.com.

Fill your library, not your device.

iCloud Photo Library helps you make the most out of the space available on your iOS device, so you can spend more time shooting pictures and less time managing them. It can automatically keep the original high-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and leave behind lightweight versions that are perfectly sized for each device. You get 5GB of iCloud storage free, and other storage plans will start at $0.99 per month.

So it seems iCloud Photo library will move the original from the device to iCloud and leave a lower quality one on the device for offline viewing I presume.

It's a good idea but the 5GB space will fill up really quickly. I am keeping my iCloud library disabled.

Can I still have my photos stored locally on my phone's memory?

There doesn't seem to be any want I get at iCloud photos via web or PC.

If I understand your question correctly, you can install the iCloud Control Panel on a PC and iCloud photos will automatically download to the PC. However, those downloaded pictures always match what's in iCloud. So if you delete a picture from iCloud it will be deleted from your PC (unless you take steps to save it, e.g., copy it to a new location).

iPhoto library can be as big as you want / have space for on your drive (internal or external). iCloud is provided by Apple so 5GB free and the rest you pay for. Until iCloud gets much larger you should save locally to iPhoto and backup elsewhere. The attraction of cloud storage is it should be professionally backed up and the transfer can be set to be wifi in the background/automatic

If this ends up being true, I hope there's at least an option to keep the full resolution photos on your phone. I have over 1000 photos on my phone and plenty of free space, I want the originals on my phone.
